Description:
Occurs while using Apache Ant.

Cause:
You have installed Ant 1.6.x and now get Exception in thread “main” java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError. The cause of this is that there is an old version of ant somewhere in the class path or configuration.

Description:
Occurs while connecting to a database using JDBC.

Cause:
Your classpath is incorrect and Java cannot find the driver you want to use.

Cause:
The XML formatter needs the DOM classes to work. If you are using JDK 1.4 or later they are included with your Java Runtime and this problem won’t occur. If you are running JDK 1.3 or earlier, the DOM classes have to be on your task’s .

ClassNotFoundException or NoClassDefFoundError while using JBoss

There is little difference between the two:
a. NoClassDefFoundError represents an unfound import
b. ClassNotFoundException represents dynamic classloading

Cause:
a.You forgot to add the class
b. You forgot to add a class that this class depends upon
c. You compiled the class for the wrong version
d. The class is not visible from where it is being loaded
e. You are deploying on Windows (NTFS)

There are 2 versions of JBoss-4.2.3 GA. One for JDK6 and one for JDK5. You probably downloaded the JDK6 version which cannot be used with a JDK5.
